Waipiro Bay rivermouth just after Cyclone Bola about April 1985

Tokomaru Bay/Waima has a very good right hand point that works on southerly swells. Not a very good photo as it was taken in 1978 when I was on a Xmas road trip around the East Cape. I lived at Ruatoria from 1985-1989 and the surf was uncrowded. There are plenty of handy spots. Locals are an education.

Mainly I surfed Waipiro Bay, the northern beach breaks and on good swell the Rivermouth and Frog rock at the Southern end. It was only crowded on weekends when the Gisborne crew would arrive, but they would always respect the locals, which is still good advice today. Photo is of the Rivermouth.
